On Cusp of March 18th Peace Protest, Activists Challenge Chicago Mayor Daley to Back Words with Policies

Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley surprised many in the Chicago peace community with remarks he made in a February speech, lamenting the misallocation of American funds towards war and the presumed paucity of antiwar activism.

Activists quickly decried Mayor Daley for hypocrisy in his remarks, given that since 2003 he has acted repeatedly to suppress, intimidate, arrest, and otherwise block grassroots Chicago peace activists and antiwar protest. Peace activists repeatedly challenged Daley to support his words with actions — including calling for the end of abusive practices by Chicago police and ending the militarization of Chicago peace protests and Chicago public schools.

BREAKING: Court Allows Torture Suit Against Former Defense Sec't Rumsfeld

CHICAGO – Federal Judge Wayne R. Andersen issued an historic ruling on Friday in Chicago, allowing a lawsuit that charges former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld with authorizing torture to go forward. Rumsfeld argued that, as a high-placed government official, he was immune from allegations of torture and that the Constitution allowed a person in his position to order interrogation techniques that are widely considered by human rights experts to be torture. The Court rejected both arguments and held that high-placed cabinet officials can be held personally liable if they authorize the use of torture. Read more.

Chicago journalist and anti-Olympics activist Martin Macias deported from Canada

From the newswire: "Martin Macias, Jr., a credentialed freelance journalist who contributes to Vocalo.org, the online and new media outlet for Chicago Public Radio, was turned back from the Canadian border late Saturday night.

"[Macias] was a lead organizer for No Games Chicago, the all-volunteer citizens group that opposed the Chicago bid for the 2016 Olympics. [Macias] was part of the No Games delegations that went to the International Olympic Committee's international headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland and then to Copenhagen, Denmark to deliver materials documenting the reasons why Chicago should not have been awarded the games.
