Shout Out: Olympia SDS Needs Support

Now is the perfect time that our comrades, allies and supporters from Olympia, Cascadia, the US of A and beyond put pressure on the Evergreen administration to reinstate SDS as a student group, with full funding, complete rights and no strings attached.

Here’s who you can put pressure on. You can make the demands listed above, and feel free to add in any more information (see below) you want. Wendy Freeman will be presiding over our appeal on May 21st, but Art Costantino and Les Purce both have been putting a lot of pressure on SDS.

Report Back from Celebrate Palestine: 60 Years of Resistance

Nakba means the catastrophe, disaster or cataclysm. This is the word used to describe what happened to Palestinians with the establishment of Israel in 1948 and the resulting ethnic cleansing. In 1948, Israel destroyed over 450 Palestinian villages. The United Nations estimates over 700,000 Palestinians became refugees as a result.

Now, sixty years after the war, Israel continues its policy of ethnic cleansing. The United Nations maintains 59 refugee...

June 6th: Cindy Sheehan at Town Hall

Speaking on the subject, "A Revolution of Values: Moving from a War Economy to a Peace Economy," Sheehan will address Seattle audiences about the need to challenge our current leaders in Congress and to move the country away from its militaristic response to international problems.

Five years after the invasion of Iraq, with more than 4,000 U.S. military deaths, and somewhere between 600,000 and 1.2 million Iraqi civilian deaths, it is clear that our elected officials, even after the resounding message sent by the people in the 2006 elections, are unwilling to end the devastation.

Cindy Sheehan has been a brave and unfaltering voice against the cowardice that continues to be...

Report Back from the May Day Immigrant March

The demonstration was organized by El Comite Pro-Amnistia General y Justicia Social (The Committee for General Amnesty and Social Justice). It was sponsored by a host of organizations — including immigrant-advocacy groups, human-rights organizations, student groups, churches, and labor.

The theme of the event was "We are not undocumented. We are not illegal. We are workers." Many of this year's speeches focused on the growing outrage over how some police and other local officials treat immigrants. During the pre-march rally, Archbishop Alex Brunett told the crowd that the Catholic...

Report Back From the ILWU May Day March

Over 25,000 lILWU members held an 8 hour strike to protest the war in Iraq. The strike stretched down the west coast, from Seattle to San Diego, effecting 29 ports. The ILWU has a history of political activism, it was one of the initial unions to oppose the wars in Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan. However, the May Day strike was the first time in decades that an American union organized a strike in response to U.S. participation in a war. The union took a stand against both Democrats and Republicans, holding both parties equally responsible for funding the war in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Report Back From Olympia Mayday March

The march then headed to City Hall where people listened to more speakers. When the march set off again, it headed down one-way 4th Avenue into the heart of Downtown Olympia. When the march passed the US Bank, multiple rocks were thrown and multiple windows were shattered. The march continued onward and soon passed a Bank of America. Multiple rocks were thrown, multiple windows were broken. And then the police attacked.

Three people were singled out and arrested. As of now this author is only aware of these three. Undercover cops pulled out their pistols and pointed them at people. Many people were hit and shoved by the police.

West Coast Cargo Traffic Halted

The International Longshore and Warehouse Union declared an eight-hour strike to protest the war in Iraq. Since the ILWU controls every port along the U.S. Pacific Coast, including Seattle and Tacoma, this strike demonstrates the collective power of workers willing to use it. The Union passed an antiwar resolution to stop work in all U.S. West Coast ports for 8 hours to protest the Democrats' and Republicans' continuing to fund the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Seattle’s ILWU Local 19 endorsed an anti-war march along the waterfront. Fliers for the march read “No Peace - No Work.” The rally called for an end to the war and highlighted the struggles of workers.

One of the speakers at...

Report Back/Much Needed Venting from TacomaSmashICE Demonstration

I digress. The day before yesterday. Saturday the 26th. I have this staunch belief that people are good and that when they know that something is happening that is just wrong, they will stand up against it. So we take to the streets. Hey, they are making concentration camps and putting people in them! OK, so no they aren't extermination camps... does that make it alright? At what fucking point is what they are doing going to be the popular thing to protest? They are killing people. They are destroying the lives of thousands, they are ripping families apart. They are making 300,000 children in this country orphans and wards...

Police Repression In Tacoma: A Recounting from an Anarchist

The day began with a rally at People's Park in which any who wished to were allowed to speak. Most of the hour before the march was filled up with people talking on a megaphone about what they knew of the detention center. While people were speaking a cop who denied being a cop took pictures with not one but two telescopic cameras. Later a line of bike cops appeared behind him and waited.

The march started and people stepped off the sidewalk and into the street. The bike cops arrived and told people to get on the street. No one listened and the march continued down MLK before heading towards downtown. The crowd, mostly made up of anarchists and...

Report Back from the Tacoma Smash ICE Demonstration

The march began at People’s Park and then passed through the Hilltop neighborhood as it made its way toward downtown. The 60 marchers first defied the cops and took to the streets, but then the cops forced them back onto the sidewalks. The marched targeted Wells Fargo Bank for its shareholdings in the GEO Group, the corporation that runs the for-profit detention center. When demonstrators reached Wells Fargo, the role of cops as defenders of private property/capitalism was crystal clear.

The building was cordoned off, and robo-cops lined the plaza, clubs drawn. Later, the march attempted to cross the 11th Street Bridge to get...

Cross burnings, nooses, severed doll heads ... public displays of openly racist symbols are not limited to small towns like Jena, LA. But neither is the fight-back! Please come to this meeting to share with us your experiences confronting racist intimidation and/or indignities. As economic hard times cause many to look for scapegoats, we need to show racists and their silent supporters that their actions are not welcome ... here, Jena, everywhere!
