John McCain wants the White House in the worst way | Salon really excellent short piece on McCain's transition from the honorable "plain talk express" man of 2000 to the Rovian smear tactics of 2008. Sad, I really wanted him to win in 2000 and have lost most of my respect for him since his 2004 embracing of Bush.

The Cost of Empire « Jon Taplin’s Blog military spending as cause of recent US boom and bust economic cycles
Link Email item
A long and thoughtful piece from Jon Taplin on the long history of the US military industrial complex and posits that it is the primary cause of recent boom and bust cycles of the US economy. But this story does not have to end like some sad tale of Nero-like decadence at the fall of Rome. Those of us that have spent our life in business know that “creative destuction” can unleash the powers of imagination. It will be our task to imagine a way to free our country from the grip of a permanent war economy. It will not be easy, but it must be done.

FreakAngels - is just plain awesome. The best online comic graphic novel I’ve seen. It’s right up there with Neil Gaiman’s Sandman and other genre defining paper works. I follow a few other online comics - xkcd (like pretty much everyone else I know), and megatokyo, but this is about as good as it gets. (While searching, I found that e-sheep is no more, but somewhere in the last year after I gave up, the excellent Spiders comic was finished.

Well reasoned response to Microsoft’s suggested version targeting technique. The short story is that version targeting will make IE 7.0 a de-facto “standard” that they own. Taking away any reason for site developers to ever do more than support IE 7.0. Not sure why web developers who are interested in standards compliance should make a change to turn stop development of new standards in interest of a locked-down, buggy IE 7.0 that is owned by Microsoft?

I was just pointed at the term Levitican to describe fundamentalists who cherry-pick old testament rules and punishments while largely ignoring the synoptic gospels. I\’ve tended toward xstian or neosadducee myself - but the point is the same. In the comment thread of the last entry, one of the posters wondered why many fundamentalists spend so much time in Leviticus and so little time in the New Testament, and I think that\’s a remarkably cogent question. Indeed, it is so cogent that I would like to make the suggestion that there is an entire class of self-identified \”Christians\” who are not Christian at all, in the sense that they don\’t follow the actual teachings of Christ in...

Just installed pointui on my old SDA smartphone (which I’d previously nearly bricked to upgrade to unsupported windows mobile 5.0). It’s really, really pretty. Big, colorful UI with clean animated transitions. But it’s built for phones with touchscreens, which smart phones don’t have. The developers say they were surprised by how many people have installed it on smartphones and are putting out an update. Hurry, I like my shiny.
